The first indoor game of the season was arranged against Zurich Crickets at Baumlihof as a warm up for the Gingins indoor tournament 2 weeks later. And what a crazy game it turned out to be – read on!!
Zurich batted first and we agreed a pairs format (4 overs each pair) to all batsmen equal time at the crease so the innings was 16 overs with 4 pairs (8 a side)
Sam and Kabir were the first pair and batted nicely, losing only 1 wicket, with Sam caught behind by Max H off Ross’ bowling for 4th ball. Sam finished with 8 runs and Kabir 6. Next were Owen and Vadim who continued to bat well, only losing one wicket, this time Vadim run out by Ross. Owen finished on 11 runs and Vadim on 12. Next were Sasha and Matty, with Sasha leading the way, scoring well including a good straight 4. Matty scored more slowly, and was out twice, caught by Ray off the bowling of Fin and by Marc off the bowling of his brother Greg (playing up at U13 level). The last pair were Shankar and Paolo who tried to accelerate under some accurate bowling and tight fielding from Basel. Paolo was out once, caught by Marc off Fin and Shankar was run out twice, both direct hits from Marc. Zurich finished their 16 overs on 117 for 7 wickets meaning a net score of 82.
Basel mixed up the batting order and opened with Ross and Finlay. They got off to a terrible start, losing their wickets regularly. First good bowling by Sam accounted for Ross twice, caught by Owen and then bowled and Finlay bowled, all in the first over!! The pressure and tension mounted and they were then run out 3x in the next two overs (Fin twice and Ross once)! Both batsman finally found their rhythm and started scoring including a lovely 4 by Ross, but Sam responded bowling Ross again with the last ball of his 2nd over! When the second pair of Max H and Alex came to the crease Basel were on a net score of -14!! The second pair consolidated and Max H hit two consecutive boundaries to bring Basel into positive scoring before Zurich hit back with Owen bowling Alex. Max H finished on 20 not out. Next up were Marc and Ali with a lot to do! Both did well and looked be on course for a good pair score with no wickets, when Marc decided to charge Sasha on the last ball and yorked himself to be bowled….. Both finished with 10 runs. This left Basel on a score of 90 but net 45 with the last pair and 4 overs left. The final pair of rAy and Greg came to crwase and batted sensibly taking 20 runs off their first 2 overs for no wickets. This left them needing 21 net runs of the last 2 overs for an unlikely victory. They took 9 off the 15th over meaning they needed 12 off the last over. They scored off the first 5 balls taking them past the Zurich score with Ray needing to bat out the last ball balls to win. Matty bowled a full pitch ball which Ray played across the line and was hit on the pads in front of the stumps to be out LBW. This left Basel on a net of 79 and handed an exciting victory to Zurich by 3 runs!! Ray finished on 19 and Greg on 14 not out.
With hindsight, I am very glad we had the warm up game and the team got all those “ghosts and ghouls” out of their system 🙂
