Dragons went to Zuoz in glorious early June weather in search of lifting the U11 trophy for the first time. It was a league format with a total of 5 teams playing each other once, with 2 games on the Saturday and 2 games on the Sunday.
Game 1 Dragons (109 for 5) beat Basel Nightfuries (49 all out) by 60 runs
Our first game was against Basel Nightfuries on Pitch 4, which is a wicket so uneven, many beaches play better! We chose to bat first and my message to the Dragons was to enjoy the tournament, play as a team and do not underestimate the opposition or the pitch otherwise you will end up on 5 for 4!
Dragons opened the batting positively against some accurate Nightfuries bowling from Sophie and were very soon in deep trouble on (wait for it…..) 8 for 3 and 13 for 4 after only 4 overs with Max, Euan, Ethan and Ross all out. Then Marc and Tom came to the wicket, steadied things and started to build a partnership. Both accelerated well and too the score to 85 for 4 at end of the 11th over. Ray and George then came in and both continued to bat well until George was run out in the last over with the score on 109 for 5.
Nightfuries opened with Greg and Lewis and despite them defending well ,runs were every hard to come by and when Lewis was run out, the score was 8 for 1 after 4 overs. Greg soon followed run out for 2 and then the middle order did not trouble the scorers with Quirijn, Sophie, Charlie and Hermione all out for 0, leaving Nightfuries on 24 for 6 after 10 overs. George and Sebastian came in and stopped the flow of wickets and made the score respectable, Sebastian finishing not out on 4. Marc finished the innings off by bowling Jack with the last ball of the innings.
Game 2 Dragons (40 for 2) beat West Leman (37 all out) by 6 wickets
West Leman (a combined team from Geneva, consisting of Cossonay, CDL and GRYCC) batted first and really struggled to score against some good Dragons bowling from Tom and Ross and then Marc and Ethan, leaving the, on 18 for 2 after 8 overs with Tom bowling Louqman and a sharp run out by Ethan off Marc’s bowling. Ray (2) and Euan chipped in with wickets and good, tight fielding claimed another run out for Max. George bowled the last man with the first ball of his second over with Leman 37 all out.
Ross and Max opened the batting for Dragons and Owen took 3 wickets in his first 2 overs (Max, Ethan and then Tom), leaving Dragons struggling somewhat on 19 for 3 at the end of the third over. Marc then joined Ross at the wicket and the two of them batted sensibly, Marc hitting a four to win the game with 9 overs to spare.
After rain the previous evening the Sunday started fresh and foggy! The fog was just burning off to reveal the start of another stunning day, as we arrived to a very soggy Pitch 4 to play Zurich in the first game.
Game 3: Dragons (50 for 1) beat Zurich Crickets (49 all out) by 7 wickets
Zurich batted first and struggled on a difficult pitch to make runs. After half the innings they had reached 16 for 3. But Zurich continued to battle and score runs, well aided by 9th man “Eddie Extras”. Marc took 2 wickets, Ethan 1 and there was also a run out. Tom bowled Vadim for his third wicket with the last ball of the innings to leave Zurich 49 all out.
Tom and George opened to batting and proceeded to score sensibly, with Tom retiring on 20 and George finally bowled with the match already won with the score at 46. Euan and Max came to the crease and Max hit 2 quick fours to see the Dragons home, again with 9 overs to spare!
Game 4: Dragons (107 for 3) beat Gingins (71 for 4) by 36 runs
So it all came down to the final game against Gingins (again!). With Gingins also winning the other three games, it was a case of “winner takes all”. Tom won the toss and elected to bat first. We set a target score of 100 which we felt would be enough to win the title.
However when Ashmit bowled Tom for 5 in only the third over with 15 runs on the board, the target seemed a long way off. Marc when in at no. 3 but was out for 5 by a good catch from Gianni, again off Ashmit. Max then joined Ethan at the crease and both started to build a partnership and look comfortable. They paced their innings well, defended well but also playing some glorious shots and took Dragons to 80 for 2 with 4 overs still remaining. Both retired giving the following batsman comfort they now had “2 in the hutch” ready to come back in. Euan and Ray then came to the crease and especially Ray played some lovely shots and continued to accelerate towards the target. When Euan was run out for 10, the score was 100 for 3 with an over left. Ross came in next and took 7 runs off the last over, the Dragons finishing on a very good 107 for 3. Ray played very well to finish on 15 not out.
Gingins opened with Kabir and Charlie and started very steady against some tight bowling from Tom and Ross. After 6 overs they hadn’t lost any wickets but only had 22 runs on the board. Trying to accelerate they then lost 2 wickets in the 7th over bowled by Marc. First he bowled Charlie with a beauty and then Gianni was run out for 1 with excellent glove work by Max. Gingins were now struggling on 24 for 2. Kabir finally started to accelerate and retired on 20, bringing Wilf to the crease to join Ashmit. Ashmit was then run out (again by Max) in the 12th over, with Gingins 43 for 3. They still needed 65 runs off the last 4 overs, an impossible task against very consistent Dragons bowling. Wilf batted well for 14 not out and Ricky was run out off the last ball of the innings by Tom and Gingins finished 36 runs short on 71 for 4.
The celebrations could now begin the earnest as the Dragons were presented with the Zuoz trophy to add to both the Gingins and Basel indoor tournaments they also won!
Well played Dragons who have consistently been the best U11 team in Switzerland this season!
