Basel Dragons, featuring guests from GRYCC, Benjamin P., Pranav N. and Aakash G., came third in the Gingins tournament, behind the winners Zurich and the hosts second. The teams were all evenly matched and the difference between first and fourth place turned on a few key plays. In the opening game against Le Chat, Dragons elected to bowl and despite stout resistance from Aidan (19), Le Chat were all out for 55 (Callum 3 for 6). Musti (18) and Callum (21*) knocked off the total quickly. The next match against Cossonay was altogether more tense. Dragons again elected to field and found Hemant (18), Ismael (22*) and Mathew (22*) in fine form to post 135 for 4 in their 15 overs. Basel started brightly (Callum 27*, Musti 20*, Ishan 14, Francis 16) before a middle order wobble at 112; Pranav (15*) helped steer the ship home on the last ball, despite some good bowling from Ismail (3 for 31).
Day 2 was a different affair. In the first match, Basel did well to restrict Gingins to 114 (Alex 20*, Hanaaz 21*). A clatter of early wickets left Dragons reeling on 18 for 4 before Francis (26*) and Zain (25) restored some pride, but the hill was too much to climb and Dragons were all out for 83. This left the final match against Zurich as a must-win. Excellent straight bowling and sharp fielding (Ishan 2 run outs) held Zurich to 100 (Dayn 22*, Rahul 23, Priam 13). In reply Dragons again lost a few key wickets and even Musti (23*) aided by Francis (16) could not balance getting the runs needed with keeping wickets intact, going down for 83, tantalizingly short. Thanks go to Arnold Bucheli and the Gingins club for organizing this event.
