The U15 Dragons team took part in the U15 Gingins tournament in Carouge, Geneva over the weekend of 24-25th November. There were 5 teams playing in a round-robin format, 9-a-side with each team playing each other once. The other teams were Luxembourg, La Châtaigneraie International School (La Chât), Cossonay and Zurich Crickets Cricket Club (ZCCC).  Geneva Regional Youth Cricket Club (GRYCC) had about 5 players with 3 playing for Zurich, 1 for Cossonay and 1 (Nitin) for us.

Overall the Dragons played very well with many players playing their first tournament for the club We came in a credible 3rd, winning 2 and losing 2 (against the 2 strongest teams in the tournament) and showed a real effort, by fielding and bowling well and batting all the overs in every game!

  • Well done to Lasse (u13) for topping the Basel batting stats – in the Top 10 for the Tournament – Well done buddy!
  • Well done to Greg for topping the Basel bowling stats – joint 2nd overall on Wickets taken – Well done son!
  • Well done to Charlie for topping the Basel fielding Stats – 4th overall – Well done skipper
  • Well done to Fynn and George for making the Tournament “Dream Team”! Strong all-round performance boys – Well done!
  • Well done to Zach, Nitin, Simul and James for coming 20, 21, 24 and 25th in the batting stats – strong team performance guys – Well done!
  • Also well done to James, playing his first tournament and showed himself to be a capable all-rounder. He scored runs and bowled extremely well and was very unlucky not to take a wicket.

Final standings:

2.La Chât

Bowler of the tournament: Vadim (ZCCC) finishing with figures of 12-1-38-7

Batsman of the tournament: Luca (La Chât) with 114 runs for one dismissal

Fielder of the tournament: Ayush (Luxembourg) with 1 catch, 5 stumpings and 6 run outs

Results Day 1 – Saturday:

Match 1: La Chât 119-3 (Luca 25*, Harry 21; Matthew 1-21, Jeremie 1-13) bt Cossonay 118-6 (Matthew 25*, Jai 16*; James B 4-12, Louis 1-14) by 5 wickets

Match 2: BDJCC 124-5 (Fynn 26*, George 20; Thomas G 2-11, Kiara 2-14) bt Cossonay 123 a.o. (Adarsh 17*, Jai 14; Fynn 2-20, Greg 1-30) by 3 wickets

Charlie, as Captain, won the toss for every game, meaning we bowled first in all games! We opened against Cossonay, knowing if we played well, we stood a good chance. James and Greg opened the bowling and kept it really tight, and the change bowlers kept the pressure resulting in them being 47 for 5 after 9 overs, the half point. Greg getting Matt plumb LBW on the back foot and Fynn taking 2 wickets – a good caught and bowled and a catch by Charlie. They accelerated a bit in the second half but the fielding remained tight and we secured 4 run outs, by Charlie, Zach with keeper Nitin, Simul (who was so accurate hitting the stumps all weekend) and James restricting them to a gettable 123 all out off 17 overs.

In reply, Basel got off to a great start, with James and George before Thomas took 2 quick wickets bowling James and then Charlie with inswingers. Greg and George got their heads down and took the score to 57 before Greg was bowled by Adarsh and George by Kiara. Basel were 69 for 4 at the half waypoint. But when Kiara took her 2nd wicket quickly, having Simul caught off the ceiling Dragons were struggling on 71 for 5. Thankfully Fynn and Zack came together and worked well, moving the scoreboard without major risks. Fynn retired with 2 overs to go, leaving his brother to hit the winning runs and leave Zach on a well-deserved 19 not out. A great start!!

Match 3: La Chât 148 a.o. (Luca 37*, Harry 18; Leonardo 1-11, Malvina 1-12) bt Luxembourg 84 a.o. (Lydie 24, Rebecca 17*; Kai 2-9, Theo 1-2) by 64 runs

Match 4: ZCCC 216-5 (Roshanth 38*, Vadim 35*; George 1-16, Fynn 1-20) bt BDJCC 91-6 (Nitin 13, Lasse 12*, Simul 11; Srivaas 2-5, Roshan 2-9) by 125 runs

We knew the game against Zurich would be hard, and in bowling first, we had to try and restrict them. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and they got off to a flier with the 2 opening bowlers looser than in the first game. With Roshanth, Vadim and Sasha all retiring and not under pressure the score was a worrying 80 for 0 off 6 overs. With 3 good retired batsman to come back in Zurich could take risks and kept the score moving fast. However, Dragons did fight back, taking 5 wickets with  Greg, Fynn and Geroge taking one apiece and Charlie and Zach with run-outs. But Zurich amassed a game-winning 216 for 5, the highest score of the weekend. On reflection, I felt we did not attack enough in the field and heads went down a bit – something to work on for the La Chat game J

Charlie and George opened with the task of seeing off the first 4 overs of Roshanth and Vadim. This they did well, but both then fell quickly as they attempted to accelerate. And when Fynn and Greg followed cheaply – both caught from sharp pieces of fielding, we were struggling on 28 for 4. I was hoping we could regroup and bat out the overs. Simul (11) and Nitin (13) came together and began to gain in confidence and pushed the score towards 60. But with no let off in the accurate bowling, both were run out bringing James (5*) and Lasse (12*) to the crease and both showed grit to get us close to 100.

Match 5: ZCCC 135 a.o. (Vadim 33, Srivaas 14; Oscar 3-16, Stella 1-18) bt Luxembourg 78 a.o. (Stella 9, Charlie 8, Malvina 8; Vadim 3-7, Gianluca 1-2) by 57 runs

James then opted to guest for Luxembourg in the last game, after which most of the team with families went for a team pizza which was a great occasion and allowed the team and parents to bond a little, including some cross-table banter with Luxembourg, who went to the same restaurant! Hopefully, all got the bed early (except Matt, Sophie, Nick and I L) as we were on in the first game Sunday!

Results Day 2 Sunday:

Match 6: BDJCC 135-1 (George 25*, Lasse 24; Lydie 0-6, Leonardo 0-21) bt Luxembourg 132-6 (Charlie 24*, Lydie 23; Greg 2-28, Charlie 1-13) by 7 wickets

It was important we bounced back strongly against Luxembourg and again Charlie won the toss and we fielded. Luxembourg started strongly and built to 40 for 0 before Charlie took his first wicket of the weekend. But importantly Lux had 2 batsmen retire, so when Simul got two quick run-outs, both with direct hits, to remove the dangerous Lydie (23) and Rebecca, we pegged them back a bit. Greg then took 2 quick wickets and great fielding limited the runs, only allowing them to get away in the final few overs, with Eddie Extras featuring strongly on 45*. 134 was 10-20 runs more than we wanted to chase.

In response, we changed the openers again, with George and Lasse (our 2 U13’s) opening -big hand to them! They both did fantastically well, playing beyond their years and taking us beyond 60 after 6 overs. Unfortunately, Lasse was run out on form behind the stumps going for a quick single before his partner George retired. James (13*) then came in with Zack (13*) and both kept the scoring going before James retired from his allotted 25 balls. Greg (6*) came in to see Dragons comfortably over the line with 8 balls left. A great bounce back from Dragons, with everything to play for in the last game.

Match 7: ZCCC 165-7 (Shankar 43*, Sasha 31*; Kai 2-8, James B 1-18) bt La Chât 115 a.o. (Thomas A 25, Kai 14; Vadim 2-9, Shankar 1-4) by 50 runs

Match 8: Luxembourg 175-3 (Ayush 28*, Lydie 25*; Adarsh 1-29) bt Cossonay 76 a.o. (Jai 27*, Matthew 9; Lydie 2-11, Malvina 2-17) by 99 runs

Match 9: La Chât 181-7 (Kai 48*, Luca 42*; George 2-15, Lasse 1-13) bt BDJCC 131-5 (Lasse 27*, Fynn 23; Kai 1-12, Luca 0-12) by 50 runs

Our final game was against La Chat and at this stage of the tournament, if we beat them, we still had a chance of winning. The boys were fired up and we worked on a more attacking field, which pressured La Chat. We knew if we could remove 4 of their good players early we stood a chance. The pressure paid off with Harry falling by a great catch by Charlie off Greg and then Charlie running out Louis with a direct hit. They were 53 for 2 off 5. Unfortunately, we couldn’t remove the 2 Salama brothers – Luca and Kai and both retired. But the pressure was maintained and 2 run outs from Simul (another direct hit) and Lasse, followed by 2 wickets from George, who was the pick of the Dragons bowlers and 1 from Lasse (his first at U15 level!!) and La Chat were on a chase able 140 for 6 off 15 overs with 1 wicket needed. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take that last wicket, and the 2 Salama brothers took LaChat up to a match-winning 181 for 7. James was especially unlucky, bowling extremely well and doing everything except taking a wicket….

We changed the openers again, this time with brothers Fynn and Lasse striding out. And didn’t they do well against some quality bowling? Fynn (23) was unluckily run out and Lasse (27*) retired but due to tight bowling we had to earn every run (24 extras against our 41!).   Simul (15) lived dangerously but played some nice shots and Charlie (19) worked a nice mix of strong hitting and playing the corners. came in and kept the score going, together with Nitin (19)after Simul was bowled by a great Kai yorker. Greg came to crease with too many needed and was run out by Charlie who quickly followed (also run out), leaving George (2*) and James (2*) to see out the innings and at least get within 50 runs.

Match 10: Cossonay 99-5 (Jai 25*, Harry 23*; Vadim 2-11, Gianluca 1-9) bt ZCCC 97 a.o. (Shankar 32, Sasha 9; Matthew 1-15, Kiara 1-10) by 3 wickets

This was a match to demonstrate what a great game cricket is and never give up. The final game was between Cossonay, who hadn’t won a game and Zurich, who hadn’t lost a game. Zurich, who scored 216 against us batted first and with some great fielding and arguably risky running, they lost early wickets. Only Shankar showed any resistance. In reply, Zurich could still have won, but for guest player Harry Hardcastle hitting 23 off the 17th over!

Thanks again to all for the hard work and commitment over the weekend, whether playing, driving or watching (I think watching is the worst and most energy-draining….:-))

So overall a great learning curve, losing to 2 better teams, but experiencing a lot and undoubtedly better prepared for the next Tournament, our home one in Basel, In March next year! GO DRAGONS!
