The U15 Dragons team took part in the U15 Gingins tournament in Geneva over the weekend of 24-25th November. There were 5 teams, resulting in a round-robin format, each team playing each other once. The other teams were Geneva Regional Youth Cricket Club (GRYCC), Gingins Cricket Club, La Châtaigneraie School (La Chât) and Zurich Crickets Cricket Club (ZCCC). Matches were 8-a-side, with only 6 Dragons available we had to borrow 2 players each match. The Dragons played extremely well throughout the weekend but unfortunately narrowly lost the key head to head against GRYCC, so GRYCC won the tournament by virtue that they beat Dragons in their head-to-head match. Brief overviews of the matches are below.
Marc captained the side, with Max as Vice Captain. We lost the toss in the first 3 games and batted first in all 4 games.
Game 1: Dragons 191 for 5, (Marc V 30*, Max H 33*, Ali 30*, Ray 24; Fin R 2 for 36) beat Gingins / Cossonay (GG) 176 all out by 15 runs (Ricky B 46*; Greg 2 for 21, Ali 2 for 31)
Dragons opened against Gingins / Cossonay and we were expecting a tough game. Ross was caught off Fin in the 3rd over but Marc and Max built well taking us close to 100 before both retired. After Greg was bowled by Tom G, Ali and Ray then accelerated well until Ray was well caught for 24 and Ali retired. Luca and Sam, our 2 guest players from La Chat were both out cheaply bringing towards the end, setting a challenging 191 for 5.
In reply Ricky and Aditya got off to a good start (36 for 0 after 3 overs), before Aditya holed out to Marc at Mid on off Ali. Luca then bowled Farman, but Ricky continued to score and retired, supported well by Thomas G. The bowling was a little wayward and runs were coming easily, so Marc slowed it down bringing Greg on and this changed the game. Greg bowled Thomas G and Matthew and then a fabulous throw from Ray run out Fin, leaving the chase at 142 for 5 after 15. Harry and Sasha scored well but when Harry was caught off Ali it brought Ricky back. He started to hit out and after 18 overs Gingins / Cossonay needed 25 runs off the last 2 overs. But te task was too much and Sasha was run out separately trying to get back in his crease at the end of the 19th over, with GG 15 runs short. A solid start from Dragons against a strong team. We just needed to tighten up the bowling in the next game.
Game 2: Dragons 228 for 7, (Marc V 41, Max H 38, Ali 35, Greg 24*; Theo 2 for 34, Harry 2 for 42) beat La Chat 144 all out by 84 runs (Luca S 36*, Marcos 27, Harry 20; Ali 2 for 11)
Straight on again against La Chat, we again lost Ross early caught, but again Marc and Max built solidly with a good mix of strong hitting and placement. Ali and Greg continued with Ali retiring and we were still going at well over 10 an over being on 156-1 after 14 overs. Ray was caught for 0, and our 2 guest players Thomas G and Ricky scored and got out quickly, bringing Marc and then Max back in. Marc was run out pushing the score, Max was caught and Ali was run out off the last ball, leaving Greg 24 not out and Dragons on a hugely impressive 228 for 7, setting a mammoth 229 to win.
Despite good batting from Marcos and Luca, La Chat were always behind the rate and at 115 for 3 after 14 overs, it was only about minimizing the defeat. The pace bowlers came back on and Ali and Ray mopped up the tail with La Chat 144 all out after 19.3 overs.
A really solid performance to close Saturday and put the Dragons in a strong position for the remaining 2 games Sunday.
A fantastic team pizza was followed by an early bed…. (yeah right!)……
Game 3: Dragons 149 for 6, (Greg V 34; Louqmann 2 for 26, Sam 2 for 22) lost to GRYCC 151 for 5 by 1 wicket (Alistair 25, Adarsh 24, Louqman 23; Greg 2 for 23, Marc 2 for 25)
Dragons again batted first (we played 8 a side but only 7 batting due to only 1 guest player for Basel) but Marc went first ball, bowled by a great outswinger from Louqmann. Runs that came so easy on Saturday were harder to come by. Max and Ross built steadily and we struggled to 36 for 1 after 6 overs. Then as they were looking to accelerate, Ross was again caught and then Max given out LBW, leaving Dragons in trouble at 51 for 3 off 8. Ali and Greg rebuilt well and Ali had already hit 2 sixes when he tried a third off Adarsh and was caught on the front wall by a fabulous diving catch from Oliver – a real key moment. Ray was caught for 9 and Greg was finally caught for 34 leaving Ricky not out. GRYCC needed 150 to win, and Dragons knew they would have to bowl and field extremely well to win.
Solid batting from Louqman and Alistair got GRYCC off to great start, taking them to 71 for 0 off 7. Greg came on and both were well caught going for straight hits. Finian quickly followed being trapped LBW by Marc for 1. The score was now 92 for 3, off 11 and Dragons were back in game! Adarsh and Oliver buckled down and took the score to 129 for 3 off 15 overs – only 21 needed off 5 overs. Dragons needed wickets and they came. Marc bowled Oliver and Ross bowled Adarsh and suddenly GRYCC were down to the last wicket pair. Nevzad batted sensibly protecting Sam and despite a couple of close catching opportunities off the wall, we could not get the last wicket and Nevzad hit the winning runs with 12 balls left.
A very close and exciting game, which we ultimately lost because we were 20-30 runs short in setting a total…..
Game 4: Dragons 158 all out, (Max 43, Ray 40*; Vadim 2 for 25) beat Zurich Crickets 133 all out by 25 runs (Roshanth 30, Vadim 26; Marc 3 for 30, Ross 2 for 10)
Another very close game followed. Marc won the toss (finally) and elected to bat. Again we got off to a bad start, with Ross bowled by Roshanth and Marc unluckily LBW to Vadim sweeping. Max rebuilt but we lsot Ali for 0 and Greg for 8. After Max retired Ray accelerated well. Ricky and Kai, our 2 guest players were caught and Max came back in pushing the score until he was run out off the last ball. Dragons were 158 all out, arguably again 20 runs short and we knew we needed to bowl and field very well again to finish the tournament with a victory.
Zurich got off to a great start with Roshanth and Vadim pushing the score to 73 for 0 off 8. Then Marc had Vadim caught and Hayden stumped, inbetween which Marc caught Sasha off Greg at mid on. Zurich were now 113 for 3 and needed 45 to win off 7 overs. Ray run out Roshan with another bullet throw and Marc had Shankar caught by an excellent diving catch from Greg. The last pair was Harry and Luca 2 guest players and Ross came back on and bowled very tight. Kai (our guest player) took a flying catch to dismiss Harry, bringing Roshanth back in and the last wicket with Zurich needing 25 to win. But Ross caught Roshanth LBW on the back foot and it was all over in the 18th over.
A truly excellent game, with Dragons putting in a superb shift in the field. It really was a performance of the highest order!
In-between Zurich beat GRYCC , with Max guesting for Zurich, meaning GRYCC and us had both lost one game.
The final standings were:
|2. Basel Dragons JCC||4||3||1||19|
|3. Zurich Crickets CC||4||2||2||14|
|4. La Chat||4||1||3||9|

The individuals awards and “mention in dispatches” were as follows:
Very well done Max H, Marc and Greg V, Ray R and to the whole team for a great weekend of cricket!
|Best Batsman||Max H (BDJCC)||Max was the tournament’s top scorer with 130 runs during his 4 innings (at an average of 43.3).
Other honourable mentions are:
Louqmaan M (GRYCC, 124 runs, 41.3 average);
Aditya S (C/G 102 runs, 34.3 average;
Ricky B (C/G 92 runs, 46 average – highest average of players who batted more than 1 innings); and
Luca S (La Chat 90 runs, 45 average)
|Best Bowler||Louqmaan M (GRYCC)||Louqmaan had weekend figures of 13.1 overs bowled – 76 runs conceded – and 6 wickets taken, with his best match figures being 2.5-17-3.
Honourable mentions are:
Greg V (BDJCC) also took 6 wickets, and had weekend figures of 14-109-6.
There were five wicket hauls for Fin R (C/G); Marc V (BDJCC); Nevzad C (GRYCC) and Theo S (La Chat).
|Best Fielder||Nevzad C (GRYCC)||Nevzad effected 6 outs in the field (2 run-outs and 4 catches). Of the 4 catches, 3 came off his own bowling. This always kept the batting side under pressure to put enough runs on the board.
Honourable mention is: Ray R (BDJCC) – Ray has a tremendous throwing arm and is a very good catcher of the ball. He has kept the run rates down and also put pressure on the batting side.
Aside from these two there were some fantastic catches off the ceiling, some excellent run-outs and good catches in the deep.
|Spirit of Cricket||Marcos L
|At Gingins Cricket Club, the Spirit of Cricket Award is a flexible award. It can be awarded to the player of the tournament, or it can be awarded to a player who has put in a lot of effort and plays the game in a manner from which others can take inspiration. This year the award goes to Marcos for the latter. Whenever he was batting, no one within earshot was in doubt if there was a run on or not. He was clear and loud in his communication – yes, no or wait. As a result, risky singles did not happen when he was occupying a crease. Likewise in the field, he kept his team moving and motivated with chants that encouraged other players to join in. What this did, was it kept the players focused on the match and prevented them from going into a lull during the match.
Honourable mentions: This year, we had a number of players who could not make it in the last week or so leading up to the tournament (it happens), so to ensure that every team had an opportunity to play a full match, players were ‘borrowed’ to make up the numbers. There were several players who played for other teams, giving it everything as if these teams were their own. Taking catches, taking wickets, scoring runs. Fantastic. The spirit of cricket in Switzerland is alive and well, these players show us we can make things work with giving someone else a helping hand.
