Basel were represented in the U11s tournament by both the Dragons and Nightfuries teams.  The weather turned out far better than forecast and with a total of 6 teams competing and the whole weekend was a great experience for the cricketers and the spectators. The Nightfuries team included 6 from Basel, 3 from Gingins and 1 form Geneva Youth.

The Dragons:

Team: James W (Capt), Tom H, Ethan W, Max L, Marc V, Max H (Wkt), James A and Shreyas S

Match 1: Dragons 67 for 2 (James W 20*, Tom 16) beat Zurich 66 for 4

An excellent start by the Dragons left  Zurich 13 for 3 after 4 overs; Vedant and Aryan were both run out and Tom bowled Diayyan. However the bowlers took some time to warm up and we conceded a total of 40 extras leaving a target of total of 67. In reply Zurich bowled very tightly giving little away. However the Dragons managed to keep up with the required rate and when James W retired on 20 in over 7 the score was 29.  Tom was eventually out for 16 in over 13 when the score was 55 and then Marc & Ethan saw us home with an over to spare.

Match 2: Dragons 51 for 4 (James W 11*) beat CDL 50 all out (James A 2 for 12)

Despite James W trapping Ben LBW in the first over,  CDL made a solid start with Ismail and Beau taking the score to 30 after 8 overs. In his second over James A bowled both Ismail and Eduard and then wickets fell steadily until last man Mustafa was run out on the final ball of the innings.  51 looked like a gettable target but we got off to a difficult start.  Marc was run out by centimetres taking a sharp single on the first ball followed quickly by James A bowled by Ismail and then Shreyas caught off Owen. When Ethan was out for 7 in over 6, the Dragons were in deep trouble at 22 for 4.  However Max L and James W took control and knocked off the runs with 4 overs to spare.

Match 3: Dragons 99 for 2 (Tom 20*, Max L 20*, Ethan 17) beat Nightfuries 31 for 6 (Ethan 3 for 5)

The Dragons batted sensibly against the Nightfuries, collecting quick singles and moving the scoreboard along. Both Tom & Max L retired on 20 but Greg trapped Ethan LBW and then Sophie bowled James A.  As expected the target of 100 proved too much and 3 wickets for Ethan with Marc and both James’ also chipping in with more wickets. In the end the Nightfuries were restricted to a total of 31.

Match 4: Dragons 53 for 4 (James W 11*) beat Gingins 52 all out (Tom 3 for 1, Marc 2 for 8, Shreyas 2 for 10)

Another good start for the Dragons saw Tom take two wickets in his first over and another in his second.  The bowling remained tight so that Gingins were just 12 for 3 off 6 overs. Arjun batted sensibly to preserve his wicket and runs eventually started to come.  Having recovered to 26 for 3 after 8 overs more wickets quickly fell to Shreyas, the first to an excellent catch by James A, and then Marc who closed the Gingins innings with 2 wickets in over 12.  The run chase got off to a shaky start when Max H was bowled in the 2nd over but Marc & Shreyas held things together to be up with the run rate at 23 for 1 after 6 overs. Marc was out LBW for 8 in the next over and for a while things looked difficult as only 4 runs were scored in 3 overs.   Shreyas was run out in an unusual way by being out of his ground as the bowler bowled (its not just Josh Butler!).  Tom and James W moved things on and although Tom was bowled by Charlie when the scores were level, Max L came in to see the final run scored.

Match 5: Cossonay 70 for 5 (Tom 2 for 13) beat Dragons 58 all out (James W 17)

The final match turned out to be the championship decider as the winner would finish top of the table.  Cossonay got off to a good start putting on 9 in the first 3 overs but then Tom had Tristan caught to a sharp chance to Max L and then he bowled Amogh.  Kian and Kabir then piled on the runs until Kabir was out to another excellent catch by Max L this time off Ethan.  Cossonay continued to build their total with some late hard hitting posting a challenging total of 70.  Tom & James W opened the innings and made an excellent start reaching 20 after 4 overs but then a mix up saw Tom run out for 5.  The Dragons kept up with the run rate until in over 10 Max L and Ethan were both out to Kian and then in the next over James W fell for 17 to a good catch by Kian.  At 44 for 4 with 5 overs to go the pressure was on.  Marc with Max H and then Shreyas fought hard to penetrate the field but the bowling was too straight and the fielding very good.  When Shreyas was eventually caught and bowled by Amogh in over 15 the Dragons were 13 runs short of victory.  The result meant that both teams had played 5 and won 4 but Cossonay were champions as they had won the head to head between the two teams.

The Nightfuries (NF):

Team: Sophie H (Capt), Greg V (V Capt), Ray R, Ross H and Ewan H from Basel / Jack M, Thomas A & Meera C from Gingins and Louqmann M from GRYCC

Due to extra players on both sides or Captains agreement, the NF played with 9 players in all games.

Match 1: Cossonay 99 for 2 beat NF 35 for 5

Cossonay batted very well and it was evident they would challenge for the title. The NF battled away with Ray and Ewan both taking wickets. Ewan deserves a mention for a great C&B. They delivered the coaches target of keeping the score under 100 (just!).

In reply NF batted well but found runs off the bat difficult to come by. With Ross and Louqmann (not out) top scoring on 3 and batting through the overs, finishing on 35 for 5.

Match 2: Basel 43 for 4 lost to Gingins 44 for 2 off 13.4 overs.

Looking to better the first game, Basel batted first with Sophie and Louqumann (again) top scoring on 4 both not out. The NF struggled with their calling and running, despite encouragement from the coach doing forward rolls on the boundary! Jack also retired on 2 not out.

In reply the NF bowling was tighter with fewer wides and we made Gingins work hard for their victory. Ray starred with a wicket and a great direct hit run out. Gregory and Sophie deserve a special mention bowling 2 good overs each, with only 1 wide.

Match 3: Basel Dragons 99 for 2 beat Basel NF 31 for 6

The Dragons were always going to be too strong for the NF. Batting first, the NF again kept the score under 100 (just…) . Louqumann 4 (not out again!) and Sophie 3 not out scored the majority of NF runs. Marc bowled young Jack, the only person to get him out during the tournament….

Match 4: Basel NF 25 for 7, lost to CDL 26 for 0

This was the third game for the young NF on the Saturday, one too far and on a poor pitch with hungry tummies! Indeed we were so poor and hungry we ate the scorecard. But from memory, batting first on a slow pitch we struggled to score runs. Meera deserves a mention for defending bravely against Ismail (the fastest  U11 bowler in Switzerland)as does Jack who retired and then came back in to face the last three balls and maintain the NF record of not being bowled out. However we only posted 25 runs off the allotted 14 overs and CDL, with Ismail at the fore, steadily knocked them off without loss.

Match 5:  Basel NF 64 for 5 lost to Zurich Crickets 65 for 1.

Sunday again brought sunny skies and an early start for the invigorated NF. We set ourselves a target of 50 runs, and got off to a great start with Tom and Ross opening. Ross scoring a very good 18 runs before being bowled. Kyle (loaned from Zurich), Ewan (3 not out) and Louqumann kept the run rate going. The coach moved his target first to 60 and then 65, the NF finishing on 64.

In reply Zurich batted very well with Diayyan and Aryan reaching the target  for 1 wicket with 4 overs remaining.

Awards Ceremony

In the awards ceremony, Tom H was nominated as best bowler for his 7 wickets and Max H got a special mention for his outstanding wicket keeping.

Basel NF collected the U11 “buds” trophy, as consolation for being the only team to enter and hence joining the main U11 competition. This was more than compensation for the youngsters, for whom a trophy put a nice finishing touch on a great weekend!
