U11 Basel Indoor Tournament 14-15th March – Dragons lift second indoor trophy on the season!

posted in: Tournaments, U11 | 0

I am sat reflecting one week after the tournament, on a great weekend of cricket, played in good spirits and enjoyed by players and spectators alike. 5 teams competed in a “Round Robin” league of 10 games, with the top 2 playing in the final and 3rd and 4th playing off for final league standings on the Sunday afternoon!

The 5 teams were Dragons and Nightfuries (both from Basel), Luxembourg, Zurich Crickets and a Gingins side containing players from Cossonay and CDL as well as Gingins supplying the core of the side. In the 12 games, more than 1600 runs were scored off the bat and more than 70 wickets fell!

The tournament started early on Saturday with the 2 Basel teams facing off. The Nightfuries found the Dragons team in top form, and despite Ollie taking his first tournament wicket with a great caught and bowled to dismiss Tom, the NF batsman struggled with Captain Ross top scoring on 9 and were all out 87 runs short of the Dragons total.

Dragons then faced Zurich in the second game and batting first posted a big total with Thomas and Soumil top scoring on 22 runs. The Zurich reply got off well but after both Kabir and Kyle were out for 19, the rest of the batting fell away and Dragons came out winners by 62 runs.

Game 3 saw the first close game with Nightfuries playing Zurich. Nightfuries bowled well with Euan (2), Ross (1) and Ollie (1) getting wickets and only Kyle and Owen reaching double figures.  In reply Nightfuries paced their innings well with Ross retiring on 21 and Euan and Shiv also adding runs, Nightfuries made it home with 2 wickets in hand with only 3 balls left.

Game 4 saw the arrival of the 2 long distance teams, who both travelled Saturday morning. Gingins batted first and posted a high total with Arjun, Gianni, Kabir and Owen all reaching 20. In reply Luxembourg steadily lost wickets with only Alison and Charlie getting into double figures and eventually lost by 56 runs.

Gingins stayed in the limelight, facing Zurich Crickets in another very close game. Gingins batted first and set a target just below 120 with Wilf the only batsman retiring after danger man Arjun was dismissed by a flying one handed catch from Kyle. In reply Zurich were always in contention but crucially kept losing wickets and agonizingly ending up 9 runs short with Kabir and Ben top scoring on 21 and 18 respectively.

The final game of the day at Pfaffenholz, saw Dragons take on Luxembourg. Again Dragons batted first and set a challenging total with Max, Ethan and Marc all retiring and George finishing 15 not out. In reply the Dragons bowling was tight, making Luxembourg earn every run. Alison, Alec, Fintan and Lydie all scored runs but to no avail as Luxembourg were all out  64 runs short with George taking 2 wickets and Max in top form behind the stumps.

Following a great tournament dinner and the players stocking up on carbohydrates, if not sleep, day 2 got underway early Sunday morning at Baumlihof with arguably the game of the tournament between Luxembourg and Nightfuries. Luxembourg batted first, targeting just short of 120, with Alec and Lydie topscoring and Nightfuries being a little generous on fielding and giving “Eddie Extras” a few too many. However they set off well with Ross, Euan and Shiv all making 20 and Ali pitching in with a hard hit 11. But unfortunately the tail fell away and Nightfuries finished the innings 3 runs short.

Next were 2 games played simultaneously with Zurich playing Luxembourg in the small hall and Dragons playing Gingins in the large hall. In the small hall, runs were hard to come by and most were scored only on the walls. Luxembourg struggled to score with only Alec (20) and Lydie (21) getting started and the total never looked to be enough. Kyle gave Zurich a great start, quickly retiring and came back in to finish off the job and register the first Zurich win by 4 wickets with Kyle (23) and Owen (14) topscored.

In the other game Dragons took on Gingins and bowled extremely tightly to restrict Gingins to one batting bonus points by just passing 80. Tom bowled his 2 overs for only 9 runs and Marc for 13 runs with 1 wicket. Marc also too a stunning one handed catch on the boundary to dismiss Arjun and prevent 6 runs. Owen top scored for Gingins with 20. In reply Dragons batted sensibly and after Ethan fell early, both Thomas and Max retired allowing Marc and George to see Dragons home.

In the final league game, Nightfuries found the Gingins bowling too hot to handle and struggled to get to 55 all out. With Nightfuries, Zurich and Luxembourg all winning one, final places would come down to bonus points and Basel Nightfuries had to take 4 Gingins wicket to get the necessary 2 points required to overtake Luxembourg.  This looked highly unlikely but some tremendous catching and bowling saw Nightfuries get the 4 wickets required. Euan took 2 wickets and Ali and Ross 1 each. However it came as a result of some great catches, with Euan taking a sharp chance at mid wicket and Charlie taking 2 catches including a great catch off the wall at long on to send the Nightfury players wild!

The meant the play off games would be as follows:

3rd 4th Place: Zurich Crickets v Basel Nightfuries followed by

Final: Basel Dragons v Gingins

Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to Luxembourg, who played with a great spirit and were as well drilled as ever! Please come again next year!

3rd / 4th Play off:  Basel Nightfuries v Zurich Crickets

Zurich batted first and Kyle showed no mercy against some tired Basel bowling.  Kyle (27), Ben (20) and Paolo (17) top scored as Zurich posted a challenging target above 120. Euan (2-0-10-1) and Greg (2-0-13-1 and 1 run out) were the pick of the bowlers.

Nightfuries started poorly losing wickets regularly and looking like they would not make half the total. However some great late batting by Ali (15) and especially Charlie (who finished 32 not out) meant Nightfuries made a game of it and finally finished only 17 runs short. Zurich bowled well with opening pair Kyle (3-0-8-1) and Kabir (3-0-23-2) bowling very well. However Owen ripped the heart out of the Nightfuries innings taking a great hattrick (3-0-21-3) and walking off with the match ball!.

Nightfuries scored over 100 runs for the first time in the tournament and generally did themselves proud. Well done Nightfuries!!

Final: Basel Dragons v Gingins

Gingins won the toss and opted to bat. The Dragons bowling was not as tight as it had been and the runs flowed both form the bat and from extras. It was evident early on that the game would be very different from the league meeting between the 2 sides. Of the opening pair Owen again retired and after Kabir had been bowled by Ethan,  Arjun, Gianni and Wilf all retired on 21 runs, setting Basel a challenging 134 runs to win.

Marc was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-0-16-0.

Dragons lost Ethan early on to a sharp Arjun catch. After Tom and Max retired, Marc and Ray came in and both quickly got into double figures with some strong hitting. After Marc (11) was bowled by Gianni and Ray was run out (11), Basel were looking shaky. Gingins then dismissed Sophie (4) and Soumil (0) with Dragons not even on 100. With George injured and unable to bat, this brought Tom and Max back to the crease as the last wicket pair,  needing an unlikely 40 runs to win the tournament. However the 2 batted very sensibly and got the Dragons home without giving another chance with 5 balls of the game remaining. Tom finishing on 45 not out and Max on 32 not out.

Well done both teams for an excellent, close game of cricket.

We look forward to renewing the rivalry in Zuoz in June!
